Wix gives you limited control over performance. Here are the fixes you can make — and the ones that require leaving.
Root Cause
Wix is a closed website builder — you can't control server settings, caching headers, PHP versions, or CDN configuration. Wix sites load large proprietary JavaScript bundles that inflate page size. Their Core Web Vitals performance is structurally limited by the platform architecture itself.
Ordered from quickest win to most involved. Try them in sequence.
Wix auto-optimizes images to some extent, but uploading already-compressed WebP or JPEG images at the exact pixel size you need reduces unnecessary processing. Use Squoosh or TinyPNG before uploading. Target under 200KB for hero images, under 80KB for thumbnails.
Each Wix App Market app adds JavaScript to every page. Remove any app you're not actively using. Third-party chat widgets, social feeds, and booking apps are frequent culprits — each adding 50–200ms to page load time.
Wix animations and parallax scroll effects require heavy JavaScript execution. Disable them on mobile in Wix Editor (select element → Behaviour → disable on mobile). Google PageSpeed tests mobile performance — removing mobile animations can improve your mobile score by 10–20 points.
Some Wix templates are significantly heavier than others due to embedded animations and design elements. If starting a new site or willing to rebuild, a minimal Wix template can reduce initial JavaScript load significantly.
Wix's performance ceiling is set by their platform architecture. The JavaScript bundle Wix ships cannot be removed or significantly reduced. If your business depends on SEO or if PageSpeed matters for conversions, migrating to a self-hosted WordPress site on managed hosting is the only way to achieve scores above 80.
If none of these work…
Wix's platform architecture imposes a hard performance ceiling. Independent benchmarks consistently show Wix sites scoring 30–60 on mobile PageSpeed — the proprietary JavaScript bundle is not removable.
